THEFallow Time
ABOUT THIS JOURNAL
From mid-October to the end of November the land gives its last harvest of the year. Leaves fall, the late apples and nuts are picked, geese arrive from the north and the fields are left to rest. This is the fallow time: little happening on the surface, and everything readying beneath it.
At its heart is Samhain (pronounced SOW-in), 31 October: the Pagan New Year, and the night we now know as Halloween. The Celts counted their days from dusk, so their new year began as darkness fell on 31 October, and every hearth fire in Ireland was relit from one great fire on the hill of Tlachtga.
